<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Mark Lane was a friend of JFK and worked with him. After JFK was assassinated he wrote the first seminal book on the JFK assassination in 1966, which was named Rush To Judgement.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">The interview is funny as William F. Buckley, who was the ultimate pseudo-intellectual. My whole life I have had a love-hate relationship with William Buckley in the sense that I have been fascinated by him, and disgusted at the same time. In my opinion, Buckley was an intellectual bully, and it is funny in this interview as he attacks Lane, who and fails. Basically, Lane puts Buckley in his place.

On a side note, it is a fact that William F. Buckly Jr. worked for the CIA for two years, of which he spent one year in Mexico City working under E. Howard Hunt, who was later jailed for his part in Watergate.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">President Truman is pictured above with President Kennedy and Vice President Johnson. He was so shaken by JFK's Assassination, that within a week of Kennedy's death he wrote the following article which was published in the Washington Post several weeks later. Basically, he realized the CIA, along with other entities, was responsible for JFK's Assassination. In the photo below we see Harry Truman standing next to Dwight Eisenhower at JFK's funeral. Look at how emotionally moved both their facial expresssions are:
<span style="color: #351c75; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="color: #351c75; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I think it has become necessary to take another look at the purpose and operations of our Central Intelligence Agency—CIA. At least, I would like to submit here the original reason why I thought it necessary to organize this Agency during my Administration, what I expected it to do and how it was to operate as an arm of the President.
<span style="color: #351c75; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="color: #351c75; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I think it is fairly obvious that by and large, a President's performance in office is as effective as the information he has and the information he gets. That is to say, that assuming the President himself possesses a knowledge of our history, a sensitive understanding of our institutions, and an insight into the needs and aspirations of the people, he needs to have available to him the most accurate and up-to-the-minute information on what is going on everywhere in the world, and particularly of the trends and developments in all the danger spots in the contest between East and West. This is an immense task and requires a special kind of an intelligence facility.
<span style="color: #351c75; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="color: #351c75; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Of course, every President has available to him all the information gathered by the many intelligence agencies already in existence. The Departments of State, Defense, Commerce, Interior and others are constantly engaged in extensive information gathering and have done excellent work.
<span style="color: #351c75; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="color: #351c75; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">But their collective information reached the President all too frequently in conflicting conclusions. At times, the intelligence reports tended to be slanted to conform to established positions of a given department. This becomes confusing and what's worse, such intelligence is of little use to a President in reaching the right decisions.
<span style="color: #351c75; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="color: #351c75; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Therefore, I decided to set up a special organization charged with the collection of all intelligence reports from every available source, and to have those reports reach me as President without department "treatment" or interpretations.
<span style="color: #351c75; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="color: #351c75; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I wanted and needed the information in its "natural raw" state and in as comprehensive a volume as it was practical for me to make full use of it. But the most important thing about this move was to guard against the chance of intelligence being used to influence or to lead the President into unwise decisions—and I thought it was necessary that the President do his own thinking and evaluating.
<span style="color: #351c75; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="color: #351c75; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Since the responsibility for decision making was his—then he had to be sure that no information is kept from him for whatever reason at the discretion of any one department or agency, or that unpleasant facts be kept from him. There are always those who would want to shield a President from bad news or misjudgments to spare him from being "upset."
<span style="color: #351c75; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="color: #351c75; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">For some time I have been disturbed by the way CIA has been diverted from its original assignment. It has become an operational and at times a policy-making arm of the Government. This has led to trouble and may have compounded our difficulties in several explosive areas.
<span style="color: #351c75; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="color: #351c75; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I never had any thought that when I set up the CIA that it would be injected into peacetime cloak and dagger operations. Some of the complications and embarrassment I think we have experienced are in part attributable to the fact that this quiet intelligence arm of the President has been so removed from its intended role that it is being interpreted as a symbol of sinister and mysterious foreign intrigue—and a subject for cold war enemy propaganda.
<span style="color: #351c75; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="color: #351c75; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">With all the nonsense put out by Communist propaganda about "Yankee imperialism," "exploitive capitalism," "war-mongering," "monopolists," in their name-calling assault on the West, the last thing we needed was for the CIA to be seized upon as something akin to a subverting influence in the affairs of other people.
<span style="color: #351c75; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="color: #351c75; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I well knew the first temporary director of the CIA, Adm. Souers, and the later permanent directors of the CIA, Gen. Hoyt Vandenberg and Allen Dulles. These were men of the highest character, patriotism and integrity—and I assume this is true of all those who continue in charge.
<span style="color: #351c75; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="color: #351c75; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">But there are now some searching questions that need to be answered. I, therefore, would like to see the CIA be restored to its original assignment as the intelligence arm of the President, and that whatever else it can properly perform in that special field—and that its operational duties be terminated or properly used elsewhere.
<span style="color: #351c75; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="color: #351c75; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">We have grown up as a nation, respected for our free institutions and for our ability to maintain a free and open society. There is something about the way the CIA has been functioning that is casting a shadow over our historic position and I feel that we need to correct it
For one who was born and grew up in the small towns of the Midwest, there is a special kind of nostalgia about the Fourth of July.

I remember it as a day almost as long-anticipated as Christmas. This was helped along by the appearance in store windows of all kinds of fireworks and colorful posters advertising them with vivid pictures.

No later than the third of July—sometimes earlier—Dad would bring home what he felt he could afford to see go up in smoke and flame. We’d count and recount the number of firecrackers, display pieces and other things and go to bed determined to be up with the sun so as to offer the first, thunderous notice of the Fourth of July.

I’m afraid we didn’t give too much thought to the meaning of the day. And, yes, there were tragic accidents to mar it, resulting from careless handling of the fireworks. I’m sure we’re better off today with fireworks largely handled by professionals. Yet there was a thrill never to be forgotten in seeing a tin can blown 30 feet in the air by a giant “cracker”—giant meaning it was about 4 inches long.

But enough of nostalgia. Somewhere in our growing up we began to be aware of the meaning of the day, and with that awareness came the birth of patriotism. July Fourth is the birthday of our nation. I believed as a boy, and believe even more today, that it is the birthday of the greatest nation on earth.

There is a legend about the day of our nation’s birth in the little hall in Philadelphia, a day on which debate had raged for hours. The men gathered there were honorable men hard-pressed by a king who had flouted the very laws they were willing to obey. Even so, to sign the Declaration of Independence was such an irretrievable act that the walls resounded with the words “treason, the gallows, the headsman’s ax,” and the issue remained in doubt.

The legend says that at that point a man rose and spoke. He is described as not a young man, but one who had to summon all his energy for an impassioned plea. He cited the grievances that had brought them to this moment and finally, his voice falling, he said, “They may turn every tree into a gallows, every hole into a grave, and yet the words of that parchment can never die. To the mechanic in the workshop, they will speak hope; to the slave in the mines, freedom. Sign that parchment. Sign if the next moment the noose is around your neck, for that parchment will be the textbook of freedom, the Bible of the rights of man forever.”

He fell back exhausted. The 56 delegates, swept up by his eloquence, rushed forward and signed that document destined to be as immortal as a work of man can be. When they turned to thank him for his timely oratory, he was not to be found, nor could any be found who knew who he was or how he had come in or gone out through the locked and guarded doors.

Well, that is the legend—but we do know for certain that 56 men, a little band so unique we have never seen their like since, had pledged their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor.

What manner of men were they? Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists, 11 were merchants and tradesmen, and nine were farmers. They were soft-spoken men of means and education; they were not an unwashed rabble. They had achieved security but valued freedom more. Their stories have not been told nearly enough.

John Hart was driven from the side of his desperately ill wife. For more than a year, he lived in the forest and in caves before he returned to find his wife dead, his children vanished, his property destroyed. He died of exhaustion and a broken heart.

Carter Braxton of Virginia lost all his ships, sold his home to pay his debts, and died in rags. And so it was with Ellery, Clymer, Hall, Walton, Gwinnett, Rutledge, Morris, Livingston, and Middleton.1

Nelson personally urged Washington to fire on his home and destroy it when it became the headquarters for General Cornwallis. Nelson died bankrupt.

But they sired a nation that grew from sea to shining sea. Five million farms, quiet villages, cities that never sleep, 3 million square miles of forest, field, mountain and desert, 227 million people with a pedigree that includes the bloodlines of all the world.

In recent years, however, I’ve come to think of that day as more than just the birthday of a nation. It also commemorates the only true philosophical revolution in all history.

Oh, there have been revolutions before and since ours. But those revolutions simply exchanged one set of rules for another. Ours was a revolution that changed the very concept of government.

Let the Fourth of July always be a reminder that here in this land, for the first time, it was decided that man is born with certain God-given rights; that government is only a convenience created and managed by the people, with no powers of its own except those voluntarily granted to it by the people.

We sometimes forget that great truth, and we never should.

Happy Fourth of July.

This rare photo shows JFK wearing a suit and tie, on horseback, wile campaigning in Sioux City, Iowa on September 22, 1960. Somebody dared JFK to get on the horse, and he took their dare. Actually, it was a mule, but what a fascinatingly bizarre photo.

Candlestick park was the first modern baseball stadium ever built, and it was the first to be made entirely out of reinforced concrete. Vice President Nixon would soon be running against JFK for the presidency, and on April of 1960, and he threw out the first baseball on opening day of Candlestick Park on April 12, 1960. Nixon is pictured below with SF Giant legend, Willie Mays.

Note: Despite the fact the San Francisco Giants moved to San Francisco in 1958, they played their baseball games at the San Francisco Seals Stadium, until Candlestick was completed in 1960.
